Adult Orthodontics

Bridge Smiles Dental Group provides orthodontic care for adolescents and adults.  It is often recommended to start treatment on an adolescent patient once all the permanent teeth have come in, but adults can still get great results from orthodontic care.  There are several options for adults beginning orthodontic treatment, and the best one for you will depend on what needs to be corrected.

To correct bite issues and straighten teeth, the traditional braces method includes brackets on the teeth and connecting wires that are tightened over the course of treatment. Clear braces use the same method but the materials are tooth-colored to avoid a metallic look.  Accelerated orthodontics are applied to correct cosmetic issues in about six months. Severe misalignments and bite issues can’t be corrected in such a short time, but if your concerns are purely cosmetic, it’s a great option for a short treatment time that can completely transform your smile. Invisalign treatment is popular because of its almost invisible appearance.  A treatment plan consists of a series of clear aligners that straighten teeth over time.  Come see us and find out what will be best to correct your smile!

Have You Had A Cleaning This Year?

At Bridge Smiles Dental Group we encourage all our patients to maintain a great oral health routine at home, but it is still important to come into the office for regular professional cleanings.  During the holidays we want everyone looking forward to the New Year and maintaining great oral hygiene.  However much you brush and floss, some harmful bacteria grow in your mouth that cause gum disease and can only be removed by a dental professional.  Come see us for a cleaning to make a great impression during the holidays, and start the year off with your best smile!

It’s important to see a professional regularly to locate and monitor areas in the mouth that may need special attention, and a dentist can tell you if you may be missing a spot or skipping an important step in your regular oral care routine.  During a teeth cleaning, a hygienist thoroughly clean the area above and below the gum line with scaling tools to rid them of plaque and tartar. After the surfaces of the teeth are cleaned, the hygienist flosses between every one of your teeth and may apply fluoride if recommended by the dentist.

Acid Reflux Tips for the Holidays

Is your anticipation of Thanksgiving mixed with dread of heartburn? We hope not, but you should know that if you suffer from acid reflux frequently, your teeth may be in danger, too. At Bridge Smiles Dental Group, we don’t want that for our patients, so we’re teaching people to better understand what acid reflux does to the teeth and how they can prevent it.

The sensation of heartburn is caused by stomach acid escaping into the esophagus. This can happen if the sphincter that connects to the stomach opens when a person swallows and is unable to shut. Repeated acid exposure puts people at heightened risk for esophageal cancer and it can get into their lungs, but the acid more commonly ends up in their mouths. There, it erodes the enamel on the inward-facing sides of the teeth, making them more sensitive. It also causes bad breath and its interference with the mouth’s pH level puts people at greater risk for an oral infection.

People can reduce their chance of getting acid reflux by eating in an upright posture and avoiding large meals less than three hours before bed. They would also do well to avoid caffeine, alcohol, garlic, tomatoes, and citrus juice. Saliva flow can be increased by sucking on sugar-free candy, lots of water consumption, and throat moisturizers.

Smoking with Sleep Apnea

Smoking cigarettes exacerbates any respiratory condition, and is proven to cause snoring and lead to obstructive sleep apnea.  Patients struggling with sleep apnea should see the doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group for evaluation. We can help patients find relief from sleep apnea, but quitting smoking is up to you!  Smoking causes upper airway inflammation, meaning the swelling causes the airway to narrow and disrupts the nasal passage and throat.  This causes snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.  Cigarettes are highly addictive, and some smokers seek treatment for sleep apnea but continue to smoke. Smoking with sleep apnea not only puts more stress on the heart every day, but negates any treatment a sleep apnea patient is undergoing.

Habitual smokers may feel relaxed by one last cigarette for the day, but it actually creates more complications for restful sleep. Smokers can experience nicotine withdrawal overnight, causing more waking up and restlessness.  Quitting smoking cold turkey is very difficult, but even lessening the amount of cigarettes or avoiding smoking at nighttime can help you achieve more restful sleep.  Most smokers cannot quit on their own or on their first attempt, so don’t get discouraged!

If you have questions or concerns regarding sleep disorders, please give us a call. To learn more about sleep apnea and the treatments we offer, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. National Diabetes Awareness Month

Diabetes poses particular challenges to people with gum disease. At Bridge Smiles Dental Group, we want our patients to do their best to maintain their oral hygiene, but we understand that there are complicating factors. Since November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, we thought it would be a good time to educate people about the oral health-blood sugar connection.

Gingivitis refers to inflammation of the gum tissue. Inflammation is a natural immune system response that isolates diseased material from the rest of the body, but chronic swelling can damage tissues, too, and ultimately inhibit the immune response. One of the results of uncontrolled blood sugar is increased inflammation. People with diabetes have significantly higher odds of having gum disease than the general population. There is also some evidence that people who develop gum disease may be at higher risk of developing uncontrolled blood sugar.

It is especially important for people with diabetes to maintain regular dental check-ups and to avoid behaviors linked with gingivitis, such as excessive alcohol use. At our examinations, we can clean calculus out of the gum pockets. The good news is that treating gum disease can help to control blood sugar. We’re also happy to teach our patients better oral hygiene techniques.

Drinking Water for Oral Health

Drinking water is important for your health at all ages.  The doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group see plenty of adult patients that are guilty of not drinking enough water, so we know it can be tough to monitor if kids are getting enough too.  We want to encourage you and the kids in your family to stay hydrated and healthy!

We all know kids love drinking juice and soda, but we forget that these beverages leave unwanted sugar behind on the teeth.  The type of bacteria that causes cavities feeds on sugar, and produces acid that wears away enamel. Enamel is not replaceable, so it’s important to take care of it even from a young age.  When kids drink juice or soda, it is helpful just to drink some water afterwards to dilute acids and wash away food particles and residue. You and your children should be drinking at least eight 8oz glasses of water each day.  Drinking tap water with fluoride is important to help prevent cavities.  If you’re worried that your children may not be drinking enough water, come see us to discuss tips that might help them drink more!

Dental Bonding

With all of the environmental factors that stain our teeth on a daily basis, tea, coffee, cigarettes, etc., it’s easy for them to appear a little lackluster. Fortunately, with dental bonding, our doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. can revitalize the shade of your tooth (or teeth) and bring your smile back to life. Dental bonding is among one of the easiest and least expensive cosmetic dental procedures that allow you to correct imperfections in your smile.

Direct composite bonding is popular because it provides a successful attachment from the filling material to the patient’s original enamel and dentin. The procedure itself usually takes about 30 minutes to an hour to complete. However, if you’re having more than one tooth done, this may require several visits. To prevent or minimize stains, our doctors will recommend that you stay away from habits that are likely to stain the bonding material.

If you have questions or concerns about dental bonding or cosmetic services, please give us a call. Periodontal Maintenance

In its most advanced stages, gum disease can lead to gum recession, and even tooth loss.  Bridge Smiles Dental Group wants to make sure it never gets to that point for you and your family!  When plaque builds up on a tooth, the gum starts to pull away from the tooth and form a pocket around the buildup, which only leads to more gum recession.  A scaling and root planing procedure is used to treat this buildup and prevent the later stages of gum disease.

Scaling and root planning are two parts of a deep cleaning procedure your dentist can perform to help reverse the progress of gum disease.  The procedure beings with scaling, which is the process of the dentist removing plaque from the surface of the teeth, all the way down to the gums. Root planing is the term for any minor contouring to smooth the surface of a tooth near the root.  When plaque has been removed and the tooth root has been smoothed, the gums that have pulled away will have a clean, smooth surface to reattach to as they heal.

Dental Implants

The dentists at Bridge Smiles Dental Group replace teeth and restore patient smiles with dental implants. Implants are a permanent restorative option for teeth that are missing or have been extracted.  They look and feel like natural teeth, and are the most permanent and efficient means of replacing lost teeth.

An implant is placed over a series of appointments because of the healing time required.  Implants are titanium screws inserted through an incision in the gum. Over a period of 3-6 months, the jaw bone heals around the implant to become a solid, stable base for the new tooth. During this time a patient is fitted with a temporary crown, and a custom crown is created to match their smile perfectly.

After the jaw bone and gums have healed appropriately, the custom crown is placed in a second minor procedure.  The doctor may need to expose the head of the implant by removing some gum tissue, and the crown will be screwed to the top of the implant.  When this is complete the tooth looks like part of the natural smile, and with proper care will last for decades!

Peri-Implantitis

Implants make dental restorations much more reliable, but they need to be cared for like natural teeth. At Bridge Smiles Dental Group in Somerset County, we want patients to be able to recognize inflammation around an implant and why it is important. The fate of their teeth could depend on it.

Gum inflammation around an implant is known to dentists as peri-implantitis. There are a few possible causes, including exposed dental cement and an autoimmune disorder, but the most common is a gum pocket infection. The part of the tooth below the gum line is difficult to clean and can become a home for decay-causing bacteria. Acid produced by bacteria sticks to the tooth’s tartar, causing it to damage the surrounding gums. Gums experiencing decay bleed, swell up, are tender, and turn red. If the decay gets bad enough, they can lose mass, as can teeth, the jaw bone, and the implant post.

An implant should be fully integrated into the jaw bone and never move. If it comes loose, or enough jaw bone tissue is lost, the implant has to be removed. Since the integration process can take a while, this would be unfortunate, but it is nearly always preventable. If a patient notices that they have inflammation around an implant, they should call for a cleaning as soon as possible.

Dental Crown Placement

Our doctors at Bridge Smile Dental Group P.A. may suggest a dental crown for a variety of reasons. If a patient has a tooth that is weak and needs to be protected from decay or one that is severely worn down and needs to be restored, a dental crown will be necessary. The procedure for installing a crown usually takes two separate visits to the office and we’d like you to know what to expect during the process.

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” that is placed over the tooth to cover it and help restore the tooth to help restore it to its natural shape and size. In addition to making the tooth stronger and improving its appearance, a dental crown can assist in improving the alignment of your bite. Once the type of material has been chosen for the dental crown, preparing for the procedure itself will typically require two visits. The first visit involves examining and preparing the tooth, while the second visit includes placement of the permanent crown.

If you have questions or concerns about dental crowns, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our office, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. Electric and Manual Toothbrushes

The most important part of oral preventive care is regular teeth brushing. At Bridge Smiles Dental Group in Somerset County, we try to help all our patients understand their oral health needs. Whether a patient needs an electric toothbrush will depend on a few factors.

When using a manual toothbrush, it is recommended that people brush for two minutes per session, twice a day. This should allow them to make hundreds of brush strokes and, along with flossing and tongue scrapers, be sufficient oral hygiene. Electric toothbrushes can make tens of thousands of brush strokes per minute, but studies have not found them to be more effective than properly used manual toothbrushes at preventing decay.

The key question is whether a patient is able to use a manual toothbrush properly. There are grips that can be put on manual toothbrushes to help people with dexterity issues, but electric toothbrushes now often come with Bluetooth technology and apps that can help remind a patient to improve their technique. Apps for kids even include mobile games that reward them for making progress. Electric toothbrushes are a big investment, but they may be worthwhile to someone who has a history of decay using manual toothbrushes and needs instant feedback, reminders, or something that doesn’t require them to use their hands as much.

Veneers For A Smile Makeover

Patients of Bridge Smiles Dental Group are always asking our doctors about the latest cosmetic solutions for their teeth.  Some fixes are recommended just to repair damage or just to whiten, but veneers are the best way to give your smile a total makeover. Veneers are thin ceramic shells that bond directly to the surface of your teeth.  This gives you the opportunity to completely change the appearance of your smile and still look natural.

Patients with cosmetic issues like staining, cracked or chipped teeth, and even crooked teeth and small gaps can achieve a dazzling smile with veneers. We can make this happen in two to three visits!  First, your dentist will discuss the shape and look you want for your new smile.  Then an impression of your teeth is taken in order to custom fit the final product to the surfaces of your teeth.  The impression is sent to a dental laboratory where your custom veneers will be fabricated, which may take up to two weeks.  On your final visit, the veneers are bonded to your teeth for you to wear and enjoy!

What Is TMD?

The temporomandibular joint is a hinge that connects your jaw bone (mandible) to the temporal bones in your skull, in front of each ear.  A general term for any problem or issue with this joint is temporomandibular disorder, or TMD. Bridge Smiles Dental Group can help patients prevent and recover from negative effects of TMD.

Patients that grind or clench their teeth often end up with a sore jaw.  Other patients experience injuries with facial trauma that cause jaw pain, or result in the patient feeling their jaw gets stuck or ‘locks’ in either an open or closed position.  A custom night guard keeps the jaw in a neutral position during sleep, and this helps many patients find relief from TMD symptoms.  For any pain, your dentist may recommend an over-the-counter painkiller or warm and cold compresses.  To prevent further discomfort, you may be assigned stretches for your jaw.

Whatever your symptoms, you don’t have to suffer with discomfort in your jaw.  To learn more about TMD and the services provided at the practice, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. Enamel Erosion

Enamel helps the teeth fight against sensitivity and many different chemicals from food that causes the teeth harm. When enamel erodes, a patient may cringe while sipping hot or cold beverages and while brushing and flossing the teeth. To prevent enamel erosion, it’s best to maintain a rigorous oral care routine and visit our doctors at Bridge Smile Dental Group P.A. twice a year for an oral exam and professional cleaning.

Because it’s impossible for your body to produce new enamel, your goal should be to strengthen and repair the enamel you have left. This can be done through a process called “remineralization.” By using dental products that contain fluoride and calcium, you can actually focus on these weak spots to strengthen existing enamel before it wears away for good. Brushing with re-mineralizing toothpaste will help protect enamel while strengthening it.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea poses a high risk of dangerous health conditions for patients who are diagnosed with the condition. Obstructive sleep apnea happens when something partly, or completely, blocks the upper airway during sleep. The condition can reduce the flow of oxygen to vital organs and cause irregular heart rhythms. Our doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. can provide treatment options to help manage obstructive sleep apnea and improve your quality of sleep.

When obstructive sleep apnea occurs, our doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. may suggest a night guard or a Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) procedure as a last resort. UPPP is a procedure used to remove excess tissue in the throat to widen the airway. This sometimes can allow air to move through the throat more easily when you breathe, reducing snoring. Sleep apnea is a chronic condition that requires long-term management. Lifestyle changes, mouthpieces, surgery, and breathing devices can successfully treat sleep apnea in many people.

Caring For Your Retainer

Many orthodontic patients require a retainer at the end of orthodontic treatment.  Removable retainers are an easy step to take to preserve a straight smile.  Bridge Smiles Dental Group provides retainers for patients, and caring for your retainer properly is important so that it functions and lasts as long as possible.  A silly but common mistake people make with their retainers is trying to cut corners -- don’t try to clean or brush your retainer while it’s still in your mouth!  The retainer cannot be completely cleaned of debris this way, and toothpaste can also be abrasive to the plastic of the retainer.  Always remove your retainer before cleaning thoroughly with water and your toothbrush. Use a mild dish or hand soap to help clean off debris- never abrasive toothpaste.

You should clean your retainer daily, and also treat it weekly by soaking.  Soaking helps maintain the cleanliness of the retainer and keep it from drying out.  To soak the retainer, dissolve denture cleaning tablets in water or add a little baking soda to water to make a solution.  Storing your retainer properly is also important for its longevity.  Get in the habit of always using and carrying a case.  Too many retainers have disappeared after being folded up in napkins!

Pediatric Patients

Bridge Smiles Dental Group is proud to serve the families from our community, and we want them to know it’s just as important for children to have regular dental visits.  A child’s first dental visit should be scheduled when the first baby tooth appears, or around the child’s first birthday.  Baby teeth eventually come out, but their growth and development is important for overall oral health for the child and the development of their adult teeth.

Baby teeth should be brushed and cared for like adult teeth, and it’s important to monitor their growth and development.  Missing any tooth for too long can change the development of surrounding teeth and compromise the structure of the jaw bone, but regular checkups can keep a child’s tooth development right on track.  Our dentists are skilled and experienced in administering dental care to children.  If your child has seems nervous about seeing a dentist for the first time, we recommend going through a brushing routine with them at home, and talking about the dental visit before you arrive.  Once we get your child’s oral health off to a great start, we offer a full range of services for child patients including dental cleanings, fluoride treatments and sealants.

We love to see good oral hygiene habits formed early and make lifetime patients out of kids from our community!  To learn more about pediatric dental care and all the services provided at our practice, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. in Somerville, NJ, call 908-725-0400.

Benefits of Dentures

Dentures act as replacements for missing teeth that can be taken out and put back into your mouth. While dentures take some getting used to, and will never feel exactly the same as one’s natural teeth, today’s dentures are natural looking and more comfortable than ever. If you have a toothless smile, but desire a noninvasive treatment option, our doctors at Bridge Smile Dental Group P.A. can recommend dentures.

When you lose all of your teeth, facial muscles can sag, making you look older. Dentures can help fill out the appearance of your face and profile. They can also be made to closely resemble your natural teeth so that your appearance does not change too much. There are different types of dentures that we can suggest depending on the individual case such as implant-retained dentures, or partial dentures.

If you have questions or concerns about dentures or restorative dental services, please give us a call. Tooth Sectioning

We take seriously our promise to do gentle, painless dentistry at the Bridge Smiles Dental Group. There are times, particularly in the course of orthodontic work, when it is necessary for teeth to be extracted. In those circumstances, we want patients to understand more about what we’re doing so they’ll feel at ease about tooth sectioning.

The wisdom teeth are large and are anchored by strong ligaments. Often, the reason they need to be removed is that there is not enough room for them to erupt, which means there is also not enough room for them to be removed without incisions. But sometimes, a dentist will want to cut the tooth itself apart. This is done so that it will require less force to pull or elevate out, decreasing the risk of accidental injury to the patient. It also could mean the dentist wouldn’t have to make as large an incision in the gum line. Sectioning is only done after a patient has been numbed and sedated. It is accomplished using a dental drill and a stream of water, which minimizes heat. Following the extraction, the surgical site will be sutured and patients will usually check back in a week to have the sutures removed.

Drs. Meghadri and Grewal run Bridge Smiles Dental Group at 820 US Hwy 202 North Neshanic Station, NJ, and 15 North Bridge St. Somerville, NJ. To schedule an appointment, visit Bridge Smiles Dental.

Causes of Gap Teeth

We’re proud providers of Fast Braces and Invisalign at the Bridges Smiles Dental Group in Somerset County. They’re great options for people who want to fix cosmetic problems with their tooth alignment, such as a gap (or diastema) between their upper front teeth. But determining the right course of orthodontic treatment requires us to learn more about what caused the gap.

Sometimes, the teeth are misaligned due to not having enough room to erupt. Fast Braces are good for minor problems, as is Invisalign, but major orthodontic work will require traditional braces.  If a gap is really the only problem, it may be possible to simply cover it up with veneers, which are false fronts for teeth that can be made in a slightly different shape. These are also a good option for when the teeth are stained or have minor cracks.

It is also important to be mindful of factors that may prevent the teeth from closing. If the strip of tissue called the labial frenum, which connects the inside of the upper lip to the jaw, is overly large, it will have to be reduced. If a patient involuntarily thrusts their tongue forward when they swallow, an overbite will develop along with a diastema and the assistance of an ear, nose, and throat doctor will be needed.

Advancements in Dental Technology

At Bridge Smile Dental Group P.A., we take priority in having the latest dental technology in our office. Advancements in new dental technology allow us to offer better solutions to patients to improve oral health like never before. Patients will benefit from less-invasive dental procedures and newer techniques that are more comfortable, durable, and efficient.

This modern technique is more comfortable than previous X-rays and gives our doctors a more in-depth look inside the mouth. All of our dental advancements play an important role in improving your oral health while making you as comfortable as possible.

Sleep Apnea and the Heart

Sleep apnea is not only a serious medical condition, but left untreated it can lead to a plethora of other health issues and is dangerous for the heart.  A patient with sleep apnea does not breathe properly during sleep, resulting in low oxygen levels throughout the entire body. Breathing supplies lungs with oxygen but also the rest of the body.  When there is a lack of oxygen, the part of the heart responsible for moving oxygenated blood to the organs and extremities is forced to work extra hard.  This can cause an enlarged heart and eventually heart failure.

Mouth Guards for Sports

If you and your family are getting active in sports this season, Bridge Smiles Dental Group can provide you with an important piece of safety equipment.  Athletes participating in any contact sport should wear some kind of mouth protection. A mouth guard helps prevent damage to the teeth and jaw, and also helps prevent injuries to the cheeks, tongue, and lips.

Sporting goods stores carry mouth guards, but they are generic in form and size.  These mouth guards often end up feeling bulky and uncomfortable, leading to child and teenage athletes in particular not wearing the protection at all.  A very ill-fitting mouth guard can even interrupt breathing and speaking. Custom mouth guards can be fit over braces and won’t interrupt normal activity, so visit Hallmark Dental for a custom mouth guard fitting.  Get a mouth guard made of thin, hard plastic that protects your teeth and still fits comfortably.  This is an easy precaution to take to protect your mouth, and you can go right back to playing your best!

Losing the First Tooth

If your kid is turning into a big kid, losing the first baby tooth is on the horizon.  It’s an exciting sign of growing up, but many kids still feel anxious or uncomfortable dealing with the unfamiliar sensation of a loose tooth.  The doctors and staff of Bridge Smiles Dental Group want kids and parents to be prepared and understand why this pain occurs so your child can still have a positive tooth loss experience.

Before a baby tooth is lost, it begins to break free of its nerve endings.  This is the natural process that makes the tooth feel loose and wobbly at the gums, and the area will become swollen and red.  It can be painful, and for kids a great way to soothe tooth pain is applying a cold compress to the outside of the mouth in the affected area.  Children may complain that they find it hard to bite or chew with loose or missing teeth.  It’s still important to keep eating healthy while they grow new teeth so encourage soup, pureed fruits, and cooked vegetables.  A few tales of the tooth fairy can usually ease a little pain, too!

Crown Lengthening

At Bridge Smiles Dental Group, we want every patient to experience their best smile.  Even when patients take great care of their teeth, they may think their gums keep them from their perfect smile.  It is normal for some people to have more gum tissue than others and when it results in a gummy smile, we can correct it by a procedure called crown lengthening.

Crown lengthening is the term for removing excess gum tissue from the surface of the teeth and sculpting the gum line.  Dentists often do this in order to expose more of a tooth and affix a restoration like a crown. We also offer crown lengthening for cosmetics so that any patient can have their perfect smile.  Local anesthetic is used while your dentist removes excess gum tissue with either a scalpel or laser tools.  The procedure only comes with minor discomfort afterwards, and result is a pleasing ratio of teeth to gums that creates an even smile.  Contact us if you think your smile would benefit from crown lengthening!

When Snoring is a Cause for Concern

Some of us may snore after being exhausted from a long day at work or running around town getting errands done. When snoring begins to disrupt your partner, or if you find yourself feeling chronically fatigued after a long night of sleep, it may be time to evaluate this habit. The noisy sound of snoring occurs when there is an obstruction to the free flow of air through the passages toward the back of the mouth and throat. When snoring is a symptom of sleep apnea, our doctors at Bridge Smile Dental Group P.A. can help you treat the problem.

It’s important that habitual snorers get tested for sleep apnea because this condition can be very detrimental to a person’s overall health. Sleep apnea can make a person feel exhausted during the day, which may impair job performance and pose a danger to his or herself as well as others. Untreated sleep apnea also increases a patient’s risk of developing heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and many other medical problems. Treatment for sleep apnea will depend on the diagnosis.

If you have questions or concerns about sleep apnea, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our office, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. Root Canals and Orthodontics

At the Bridge Smiles Dental Group in Somerset County, we provide patients with a wide variety of dental services, including root canals and invisible orthodontics. Sometimes patients’ teeth have been injured and need to be moved, in which case a root canal may be a better option than a prosthetic.

When teeth are cracked at the root, they need to be removed, but in the cases of other injuries and infections, they may only need a root canal and a new crown. This may be the better option when orthodontic work needs to be done because the point of an implant is to fuse with the surrounding bone structure. Once an implant is integrated, orthodontic treatments will be unable to move it, and if it does move, it needs to be taken out.

In contrast, a root canal maintains the health of the outer portion of the tooth root, which can be guided through the bones of the jaw. We are providers of the Invisalign clear series of removable aligners, but artificial crowns are also able to receive the adhesive which is used to affix orthodontic brackets to teeth. Traditional orthodontics may be necessary if a tooth was knocked far out of place.

Research into Filling Failure

Patients at the Bridge Smiles Dental Group deserve the best, including dentistry that is based on the latest scientific discoveries. Recently, dentists have become more interested in why some peoples’ experiences with fillings are worse than others, and a new study investigated common traits among people whose fillings failed prematurely.

This study examined the medical records of people whose fillings fell out or needed to be removed after less than five years. In ideal circumstances, fillings are expected to last for ten years. The researchers found that filling failures were higher among people who smoked and that people who drank alcohol more commonly experienced filling failure after just two years.

The study also found that people who experienced early filling failure were likely to share certain genes. This was surprising to some people, although people with certain DNA sequences are thought not to react as well to certain dental materials. The study also found that white composite fillings do not fail at a higher rate than those made of amalgam. This means that patients do not need to compromise the beauty of their smiles for the sake of stable fillings.

Reduce Tooth Sensitivity

When you consume hot and cold beverages do you try to avoid touching your teeth? Have you stopped eating apples because you just can’t take the pain of biting into one? If you’ve answered yes to one or both of these questions, your teeth are sensitive for a reason. Most commonly, teeth become sensitive due to a lack of proper oral hygiene. But in other cases, you may be brushing just a little too hard. Fortunately, our doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. have several solutions for reducing tooth sensitivity.

Proper oral hygiene is ideal for preventing sensitive teeth. However, if you already brush twice a day for at least two minutes and floss at least once a day, possible causes of sensitive teeth may include tooth decay (cavities), fractured teeth, gum disease, or an exposed tooth root. The type of treatment that is recommended will depend on the cause of the tooth sensitivity. Some methods include desensitizing toothpaste, fluoride gel, and/or a dental crown.

Scaling and Root Planing

Gingivitis is the most common form of gum disease and is fortunately easy to treat.  However, when left untreated it progresses into periodontitis, which causes permanent damage.  Bridge Smiles Dental Group offers scaling and root planing, two parts of a deep-cleaning procedure meant to stop gum disease in its tracks.

Scaling and root planing is a simple and non-invasive procedure done in the office.  It begins with scaling, the term for the dentist removing plaque and tartar from the surface of the tooth all the way down to the gums. Depending on the case, a dentist may recommend completing this process over two appointments, and a patient may request local anesthetic.  This is followed by root planing, which means minor contouring to the surface of the tooth near the root.  When gums have a clean, smooth surface to reattach to, new growth of tissue is encouraged and gums heal giving the patient a clean slate against gum disease.

Caring for Invisalign

Bridge Smiles Dental Group recommends Invisalign for patients with mild to moderate spacing or crowding of the teeth.  Invisalign’s clear aligner system straightens teeth without the metallic look of braces. Another perk of Invisalign clear aligners is that they require less maintenance and won’t prevent you from eating certain foods.  Although you won’t have to make too many changes, there are still guidelines you should follow to wear and care for your aligners!

You should remove Invisalign each time you eat, but if you do eat anything while wearing the aligners make sure to clean them thoroughly afterwards. It is also best to brush and floss your teeth before putting the aligners back in.  Ideally when wearing clear aligners, you would only drink water. Colorful drinks can stain the aligners and too many hot drinks can eventually warp the plastic.  If you do drink anything other than water while wearing the aligners you should rinse them with warm water afterwards.

Cleaning your clear aligners regularly is important for your teeth and straightening treatment.  Clear aligners can become discolored over time without losing their effectiveness, but the color can show on your own teeth and continue to darken.  Invisalign offers its own brand of cleaning solution, and there are several soaking solutions available over the counter, but brushing the aligners is also a sufficient cleaning option.  Do not use toothpaste to brush the aligners because subtle abrasive properties of toothpaste could harm the aligner.  It is best to use a mild dish soap and a soft bristle brush to clean the aligners each time you brush your teeth.

Alcohol and Oral Cancer

At Bridge Smiles Dental Group, we provide treatment for a number of oral health issues, but our preferred approach is prevention. To help combat oral cancer, we wanted to pass along new findings from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) linking cancer to use of alcohol.

According to the ASCO’s new study, use of alcohol increases the risk of cancer, including of the mouth and throat, by about 5%. This number is inclusive of alcohol when used in light or moderate amounts, although heavy drinking appears to be riskier. The rate was unchanged by the amount of alcohol consumed. While doctors have long warned of the dangers of drinking and smoking, this study was different in that it examined drinking in isolation. The exact reason alcohol is linked to oral cancer remains unknown, but the researchers suspect that the breaking down and rebuilding of the soft tissues of the mouth increases the risk of DNA getting miscopied, resulting in cancerous growths.

Not all the news from the ASCO is bad. While alcohol is associated with many types of cancer, the damage it does to the aerodigestive tract is reversible. When people quit drinking, their risk for oral cancer declined to the level of people who never drank.

Lip Care in Winter

With more winter weather to look forward to, we at Bridge Smiles Dental Group want to make sure our patients, and especially, those wearing braces, know how to care for their lips. Cold air cannot retain much moisture and high winds make some chapping likely, but there are precautions which can reduce the risk of irritation to the mouth’s soft tissues.

Outside, the only real option is to keep a scarf wrapped tightly around the face, but inside, you can make some modifications to the environment. It’s a good idea to have a humidifier in the bedroom and anywhere else you need to spend a long time. Avoid hot, long showers, since they dry the skin out faster. Applying lip balm several times a day, including before bed is helpful as long as you’re not allergic to the ingredients. If your lips get red and swollen after applying the balm, check the ingredients for menthol and switch products.

Since the air is drier this time of year, people who suffer from dry mouth are going to be particularly at risk. Any sort of breathing issue which could be contributing to dryness needs to be investigated. Avoid wetting the lips with saliva, since saliva evaporates quickly, taking more moisture with it. If you have braces and are suffering from irritation, they should apply dental wax to their brackets in large quantities. Do not attempt to protect the lips by folding them under the teeth, as this will further inflame them and may cause tooth migration.
