Beat Bad Breath

It’s easy to smell bad breath on others but it’s hard to smell your own. Bad breath odor is usually caused by a group of anaerobic, sulfur-producing bacteria that breed beneath the surface of the tongue and often in the throat and tonsil area. These bacteria occur naturally in your oral environment and are supposed to be there because they assist your digestion by breaking down proteins into amino acids. Here at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A., our doctors can help you develop a treatment plan to eliminate this self-conscious problem.

By developing the right habits, you can be effective at preventing bad breath. Some of these habits include, but are not limited to brushing your teeth twice a day, brushing or scraping your tongue, floss your teeth, use an antibacterial mouthwash, chewing sugar-free gum, quitting smoking, and scheduling a dental checkup twice a year.  If you have persistent bad breath, it helps to keep a diary of the foods you eat and to list any medicines that you are taking.

If you have bad breath, give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. The Dental Cleaning: Defined

No matter how much you diligently brush or floss your teeth at home, harmful bacteria grow in your mouth that can only be removed by a dental professional. These bacteria can cause gum disease and significantly affect your overall health. Here at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. our hygienists will use professional tools to remove plaque, tartar and bacteria build-up that you are unable to efficiently remove yourself.

According to the Academy of General Dentistry, it is recommended that a dentist or hygienist perform a dental cleaning every six months. The professional dental cleaning reinforces the home-care oral health regimen of brushing and flossing and gives the dentist an opportunity to locate areas in the mouth that may need special attention. During a teeth cleaning, our dentists will thoroughly clean the area above and below the gum line with scaling tools to rid them of plaque and tartar. Once the surfaces are smooth, polishing is done using a slow speed handpiece with a soft rubber cup that spins on the end. Last but not least, the dentist flosses every crevice between your teeth.

If you need your teeth cleaned don’t wait any longer, call us today so we can help you maintain a healthy smile! To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. Post-Op Tooth Extraction Care

There are many reasons why a tooth may need to be extracted. Tooth decay, gum disease, or even for orthodontic purposes are a few. After the tooth is removed, you may need stitches and you will need to follow strict instructions that our doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. will give you. After the surgery, you will need to rest and you should expect the extraction site to bleed a little following extraction. In addition, here are a few things to remember during post-op care.

If bleeding continues for longer than 24 hours you should call our office immediately. Once you return home after the surgery you should rest, but do not lie flat. This could prolong the bleeding. One of our doctors will prescribe you pain medication, as well as cleaning solution for the extraction site, so if you become sore take as directed. It’s important to limit yourself to soft foods such as gelatin, pudding, yogurt, mashed potatoes, etc. so that the stitches are not punctured. When drinking, make sure you do not use a straw, because the sucking motion can loosen your sutures and slow the clotting process.

If you are experiencing tooth discomfort or have questions about post-op aftercare, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. in Somerville, NJ, call 908-725-0400.

Occlusal Adjustment for a Misaligned Bite

A misaligned bite can lead to jaw soreness, sensitive teeth, and pain. It can even affect the way you eat. Here at Bridge Smiles Dental Group in Neshanic Station, NJ and Somerville, NJ, we have an easy fix for a misaligned bite called an occlusal adjustment.

When teeth are misaligned, biting and chewing can create uneven pressure on the jaw. The jaw joints and the muscles surrounding them can become fatigued and sore. Teeth also experience unnatural pressure. They can become worn down in areas which can lead to sensitivity and injury. Fractures are common with misaligned teeth as well as difficulty chewing food.

An occlusal adjustment makes minor changes to the teeth so that they can line up correctly. We use advanced computer technology to detect precise abnormalities in the patient’s bite. To adjust these areas, we use a very fine filling stone. Our technology allows us to be as accurate as possible so that only the necessary areas are filed down.

An uneven jaw can lead to pain and sensitivity. Fortunately, an occlusal adjustment is a simple and quick procedure. To set up your appointment with Bridge Smiles Dental Group, call our Neshanic Station, NJ office at (908) 782-4418 or call our Somerville, NJ office at (908) 725-0400. Custom Teeth Whitening Trays

Bright and white teeth are something many of us desire, though it can be difficult to acquire on our own. This is because many store-bought whitening kits do not give you the results you want. At Bridge Smiles Dental Group in Neshanic Station, NJ and Somerville, NJ, we can provide our patients with brilliant whitening results using custom take-home teeth whitening trays.

At Bridge Smiles Dental Group, our professional teeth whitening procedure involves custom-created trays that hold in a powerful whitening gel. Since you are able to take the trays with you, the process can be completed in the comfort of your own home and on your time. We take impressions of your teeth to create the custom trays, first. The trays look a lot like Invisalign trays. The whitening gel is placed into the trays and worn for a short period of time over the duration of a few days. Depending on your lifestyle, you can make them work during the day or overnight. The end result often gives patients a smile four to eight shades whiter!

If you are looking to whiten your teeth for an upcoming event or just to boost your self-esteem, be sure to set up an appointment with us. Defining Sleep Apnea

Sleep Apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts. There are two main types of sleep apnea: obstructive sleep apnea, the more common form that occurs when throat muscles relax, and central sleep apnea, which occurs when your brain doesn’t send proper signals to the muscles that control breathing. Here at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A., our doctors may suggest oral surgery to assist with sleep apnea, depending on the severity of the condition, but we always consider non-invasive options first.

When obstructive sleep apnea occurs, the muscles relax, your airway narrows or closes as you breathe in, and you can’t get an adequate breath in. Your brain senses this inability to breathe and briefly rouses you from sleep so you can reopen your airway. You may make a snorting, choking or gasping sound. When central sleep apnea occurs, you may awaken with shortness of breath or have a difficult time getting to sleep or staying asleep. Like with obstructive sleep apnea, snoring and daytime sleepiness can occur. Regardless of the type you have, it’s best to explore your treatment options.

If you sleep apnea is a concern of yours, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. Sensitive Teeth: Causes and Treatment

If you are experiencing tooth pain when biting into hot or cold foods, you may have sensitive teeth. Sensitive teeth are caused when your gums pull back and expose the surface beneath, called the dentin. This soft layer makes up the inner part and roots, which have thousands of tiny tubes that lead to the tooth’s nerve center (the pulp). Proper oral hygiene is the key to preventing sensitive tooth pain. This is why it’s important to visit our doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. for regular dental checkups.

Fortunately, sensitive teeth can be treated. The type of treatment will depend on what is causing the sensitivity. Having a conversation with one of our doctors is the first step in finding relief from your discomfort. After he or she determines the reason for your sensitivity, treatment may be as simple as applying an in-office fluoride gel to help you manage the tenderness.

If you are experiencing tooth sensitivity, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. Why You Might Need a Night Guard

Sleep bruxism, also known as nocturnal tooth grinding, is the medical term for clenching or grinding teeth during sleep. People who are distressed by this disorder can suffer headaches, earaches, jaw pain, jaw joint disorders as well as damaged teeth. For patients with severe and persistent sleep bruxism, our doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. may prescribe a night guard made of soft plastic to protect the teeth.

Grinding your teeth can damage enamel, wear down teeth, cause jaw pain, or irritate your gums. The night guard, which is very similar to a mouth guard worn by athletes, provides a barrier between your top and bottom teeth while you sleep. All night guards at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. are custom-fitted for comfort and allow for proper breathing. To create the night guard, one of our doctors will first take an impression of your teeth and have the night guard created by a dental lab.

If you catch yourself grinding your teeth or wake up with jaw pain every morning, give us a call to discuss your options. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. Dental Bonding for Natural-Looking Tooth Restoration

Chips and cracks can diminish a smile. Fortunately, there is a simple solution. Here at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. in Somerville, NJ and Neshanic Station, NJ, we offer dental bonding as a quick and affordable, yet strong and natural-looking restoration option.

Dental bonding is the process of shaping composite resin to fill in cracks, gaps, or misshapen teeth. It can also be used for long-lasting whitening. The resin is chosen in the same shade as your teeth for restorations or a brighter shade for whitening purposes. With good dental care, bonding can last over ten years.

The process of applying bonding first starts with lightly etching the teeth. This is to create a strong bond between your tooth and the resin. Your dentist will then smooth the resin over your tooth and shape it to make the desired improvement. An ultraviolet light is then used to harden the material. Afterwards, the resin may be polished so that it shines like natural tooth material.

Gaps, cracks, misalignments, chips, and discoloration are just some of the issues dental bonding can help fix. To set up your appointment with Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A., give our Somerville, NJ office a call at (908) 725-0400 or call our Neshanic Station, NJ office at (908) 782-4418. What is an Underbite?

The main cause of an underbite is a misalignment of the lower jaw, which is usually present at birth. An underbite, clinically called prognathism, is the malocclusion or “bad bite” that happens when the lower teeth overlap the upper teeth. Just because your mouth may have this problem doesn’t mean that it’s untreatable. If you have been diagnosed with an underbite, our doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. can correct the problem with dental braces.

Although far less common than overbites, underbites still affect 5-10 percent of the population. An extreme underbite can cause facial abnormality, resulting in an extended chin. Additionally, underbites including difficulty with chewing, swallowing and speaking. Underbites may also wear down tooth enamel and increase your chances of developing tooth decay or other dental problems such as TMJ disorder.

Overbite Overview

If you have been diagnosed with an overbite, this simply means that your top teeth extend beyond your bottom teeth. It is a common dental problem that our doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. can correct with braces. Overbite teeth are considered a type of “bad bite.” It can either be noticeable or unnoticeable, but it some extreme cases it can make your jaw look significantly larger or your bottom jaw look much smaller.

Most often, overbites are inherited as traits just as the color of your eyes or the freckles on your cheeks. Other causes of misaligned bites may result from an early loss of baby or adult teeth, gum disease, or common oral health problems in children, such as thumb sucking. Once one of our doctors confirms your overbite with X-rays, he or she may take regular photographs of your face to further examine the relationship between the teeth, jaws, and head. From there, an individualized treatment plan will be developed to correct the bite.

Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays are able to restore your tooth so it remains healthy in your mouth for a long time. When there is damage to a tooth but the root is still intact, inlays or onlays, commonly called partial crowns, can ensure the tooth remains in place. We offer inlays and onlays here at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. in our Somerville, NJ and Neshanic Station, NJ locations.

As mentioned before, inlays and onlays are like partial crowns. Inlays take care of the chewing surface within the cusps. Onlays take care of the chewing surface plus one or more cusps. They take care of damaged tooth when there is no need for a full crown but when there is more damage than a filling can hold. Inlays and onlays can be made of gold, composite resin, or porcelain. Taking good care of the inlay or onlay will ensure long-lasting protection. With good care, they can last for over thirty years.

The options with composite resin or porcelain are tooth colored and are made to blend right in with your teeth. The inlays and onlays are completely customized to your specific tooth. This aids the best bond and the most successful outcome. It also helps create your natural-looking smile.

If you are looking to repair the look and strength of your teeth, look no further. Flossing with Braces

As our doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. will tell you, flossing can be difficult when you have braces, but it’s more important than ever to keep the gaps in your teeth clean when you have a mouth full of metal. Many folks who have braces don’t know how to floss with them or think that they can’t floss at all if they have braces and this is not true. We already taught you how to brush with braces, so it’s only fair that we share some tips for flossing effectively and keeping those brackets and wires clean.

  • Use waxed floss, because unwaxed floss is more likely to get caught and shred in your braces.

  • Use about 18 inches of floss and thread it carefully.

  • Take the floss and gently thread it under the main wire of the braces before passing it between two teeth. Then remove the floss and re-thread it under the main wire to pass between the next pair of teeth.

  • Be sure not to snap the floss. Simply move the floss up and down carefully against the side of each tooth.

Brushing with Braces

If you have braces, you should be working overtime on practicing proper oral hygiene. This is because braces have tiny spaces where food particles and plaque get trapped, and inadequate cleaning while wearing these wires can cause enamel staining and tooth decay around brackets or bands. Our doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. can’t stand behind you to monitor how you often you brush, but we can provide you with the following routine that will help make brushing with traditional braces both simple and effective.

  • Prepare to brush – take off elastics, and any other removable parts of your orthodontic appliance.

  • Clean your braces – use your brush at a 45-degree angle to clean around the wires and pins of your braces. Brush the top of each wire and then from the bottom. Take time to ensure that all plaque and debris are removed.

  • Brush your teeth – clean each tooth individually. First, place your brush at a 45-degree angle to the junction between the tooth and the gum, and then apply gentle pressure as you move in a circular motion. Use the same brushing action on all outer and inner tooth surfaces, tilting the brush as needed to better reach the insides of smaller front teeth.

If you have questions about your orthodontic oral care, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. Cosmetic White Fillings

If you have tooth decay that has caused a cavity (hole) in your tooth, then you are likely to benefit from a cosmetic filling. However, decay is not the only reason you may need a filling. Other reasons include: cracked or broken teeth, teeth that are worn from habits such as nail-biting, as well as tooth grinding. When you schedule a professional dental cleaning with one of our doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A., he or she will check for these problems, and decide whether a filling is right for you.

The type of fillings we provide at the office is called composite resin, or tooth-colored (white) filling. This type of filling provides good durability and resistance to fracture in small-to-mid-size fillings that need to withstand moderate pressure from the constant stress of chewing. They can be used on both the front or back teeth and supply the patient with a more natural looking appearance.

If you think you may benefit from white fillings, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. Dental Emergency Details

Our doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. understand that accidents happen. Knowing what to do when one occurs can mean the difference between saving and losing a tooth. If you or your child experience some sort of trauma to your mouth for whatever reason, please give us a call immediately. Meanwhile, in the midst of a dental emergency, utilize these tips to ensure a smooth recovery.

  • For a knocked-out permanent or adult tooth, keep it moist at all times. If you can, try placing the tooth back in the socket without touching the root. If that’s not possible, place it between your cheek and gums, or use a tooth preservation product that has the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of acceptance.

  • For a cracked tooth, immediately rinse the mouth with warm water to clean the area.

  • If you bite your tongue or lip, clean the area gently with water and apply a cold compress.

  • For toothaches, rinse the mouth with warm water to clean it out. Gently use dental floss to remove any food caught between teeth.

Rotary Endodontics

Advances in dental technology have allowed us to become more accurate and efficient. In addition, many updates also allow us to improve the process of different procedures. While root canals used to have a reputation of being painful or scary, rotary endodontics have allowed us to perform gentle and quiet root canals. Here at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. in Somerville, NJ, we believe that updating our technology allows us to give the best care to our patients.

In the past, performing a root canal included using a manual file. Rotary endodontics is a new and improved system for performing root canals. It uses an electric drill and a more flexible file made of titanium alloy. The added flexibility allows the dentist to go further into the tooth’s root without stretching or damaging the canal. This decreases discomfort during and after the procedure. Rotary endodontics is also much quieter than the manual files of the past, so those who get anxious about hearing the drilling can feel more relaxed. Rotary endodontics also quickens the process of a root canal, which is great for both the patient and the doctor.

Our patients’ health and comfort are on top of our priority list. This is why we have implemented rotary endodontics into our office. To learn more about the technology we use here at Bridges Smiles Dental Group P. A. in Somerville, NJ, call our office at (908) 782-4418 or visit our website, www.bridgesmilesdental.com

Stages of Gum Disease

If you want to keep your permanent teeth for a lifetime, then you need to listen when a parent or one of our doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. tells you to brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once a day. If you don’t practice a proper oral hygiene routine on a daily basis, you’re already on the path toward gum disease. Gum disease is an inflammation of the gums that can progress to affect the bone that surrounds and supports your teeth and there are three stages that you need to be aware of.

  • Gingivitis – This is the earliest stage of gum disease, an inflammation of the gums caused by plaque buildup at the gum line. If daily brushing and flossing do not remove the plaque, it produces toxins that can irritate the gum tissue, causing gingivitis. This is when you’ll notice blood in the sink after you complete your brushing routine. However, at this early stage, damage can be reversed, since the bone and connective tissue that hold the teeth in place are not yet affected.

  • Periodontitis – This is the second stage of gum disease. By this point, the supporting bone and fibers that hold your teeth in place are irreversibly damaged. Your gums may even begin to form a pocket below the gum line, which traps food and plaque.

  • Advanced Periodontitis – This is the final stage of gum disease, and the fibers and bone supporting your teeth are officially destroyed. In this case, your teeth may begin to shift or loosen and your bite may also be affected. If aggressive treatment can’t save them, the teeth will need to be extracted.

If you suspect that you are in the early stages of gum disease, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. Tips for a Nice Smile

At Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. our staff wants your smile to be camera-ready at all times. With all of the food and lifestyle habits such as smoking that have the ability to stain our teeth on a daily basis, even proper maintenance can leave them looking a little dull. To improve the appearance of your smile, we offer teeth whitening services to restore the natural color of your teeth or even make them whiter if you would like. However, if you can’t go the cosmetic route at this moment, our staff thought we would share some tips for you to show off the smile you already have!

  • Be natural – when it’s picture time, smile gently. That way, your face looks relaxed. Your mouth opens slightly, and your lower lip matches the curve of your upper teeth.

  • Check your teeth and gums – getting your smile camera-ready sometimes calls for a little behind the scenes prep work. If your pearly whites have yellowed with age, try an over-the-counter whitening product or pay us a visit! Also, don’t forget about taking care of your gums. They play a critical role in your nice smile. So keep them in good shape by brushing, flossing, and rinsing with a mouthwash every day.

  • Practice – your perfect smile may not happen overnight, but if you have a big photo event like a wedding or a graduation coming up, it doesn’t hurt to try out your grin in front of the mirror!

If you wish to improve the appearance of your smile, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. Advantages of Teeth Whitening

How many of us get a confidence boost when a stranger gives us a compliment? Have you ever paid attention to how much of a positive effect this has on your self-esteem? The same applies to teeth whitening. Teeth-whitening is an excellent way to restore the natural color of your teeth or even make them whiter than your natural color if you would like. Here at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A., we can help you do just that.

With all of the lifestyle habits and environmental factors that have the ability to stain our teeth on a daily basis, even proper maintenance sometimes leave them a little dull. Fortunately through our tray whitening system, your pearly whites can revive their shine. In addition, teeth-whitening can also take years off of your appearance. This is because as we age, over time, our teeth darken and can become yellow, brown, or even develop a green or grey tint (which may be due to heredity and/or eating habits). Your smile speaks volumes about who you are and leaves an everlasting impression, so it’s only natural that you want it to be as radiant as possible.

If you desire a brighter smile, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. in Somerville, NJ, call 908-725-0400.

Dental Crown Details

Over time, our teeth begin to weaken and become more susceptible to problems such as decay, cracks, and discoloration. Fortunately, our staff at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. offers restorative treatment options, such as dental crowns. A dental crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” that is placed over a tooth – to cover the tooth to restore its shape and size, strength, and improve its appearance. Crowns can be made from porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or gold. However, to maintain a natural look and feel a porcelain finished crown is highly recommended as it can be matched to the shade of your other teeth.

The procedure for installing a dental crown typically takes two separate visits. On the first visit, your tooth will be reshaped and by filing down the enamel so that the crown can be placed over it. Once the tooth has been reshaped, a mold will be taken of that tooth and the surrounding teeth. This mold will be sent to a dental lab so that the permanent crown can be made. Before you leave the office, you will be fitted for a temporary crown so that you have some protection on the tooth. In about two-three weeks you will come back for the final result.

If you think you may benefit from a dental crown, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. in Somerville, NJ, call 908-725-0400.

Crown Lengthening in Somerville, NJ

Occasionally, crown lengthening is needed in order to perform dental work under the gum line. Here at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. in Somerville, NJ, our skilled doctors perform crown lengthening for our patients in need.

Crown lengthening can be performed for both oral health and cosmetic reasons. When there needs to be a crown or a filling placed on a tooth below the gum line, crown lengthening makes it possible. A more cosmetic reason is commonly referred to as “gummy smile” where there is excess gum tissue covering the teeth.

The process of crown lengthening consists of removing gum tissue to expose more of the tooth. Your dentist will make incisions in the gum tissue to pull away the gums. If bone needs to be pulled away to reach the tooth, this will be performed next. The area will be rinsed clean and the gums will be stitched into place.

After crown lengthening, you will want to be careful brushing the teeth around the area. In addition, do not floss down to the gum line until the gums have healed. You will want to keep your mouth as clean as possible to allow proper healing and avoid infection.

For more information regarding crown lengthening, call Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. of Somerville, NJ at 908-725-0400. Information may also be found on our website, www.bridgesmilesdental.com

Dental Bridges for Tooth Replacement

Replacing a missing tooth improves the quality of your oral health and gives you back your smile! At Bridge Smile Dental Group P.A. here in Somerville, NJ, we offer dental bridges as one of our tooth replacement options. Dental bridges have been around for a long time and they are popular with many of our patients.

A dental bridge is a restoration compiled of two dental crowns and one replacement tooth, called a pontic. The pontic is set in between the crowns. The teeth adjacent to the open space are reshaped so that the crowns can be placed on them and the replacement tooth fits snuggly in the open space. Bridges are permanent, may be made completely custom, and they are durable.

To create a custom bridge for each patient, we first reshape the adjacent teeth and then take an impression of the area. The impression is sent to a dental laboratory where the custom bridge is created to look and feel like your normal teeth. During the creation process, you will wear a temporary bridge to protect your teeth.

Replacing a tooth is important for the health of your smile and your jaw. To find out if a dental bridge is the right option for you, set up a consultation with Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. in Somerville, NJ by calling our office at 908-725-0400 or by visiting our website, www.bridgesmilesdental.com

Mouth Guards Prevent Dental Injuries

If you play contact sports, such as baseball, basketball, and hockey, our staff at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. hopes that you’re wearing a mouth guard. Imagine what it would be like if you suddenly lost one or two of your front teeth. Your smile, speech, and chewing abilities would all be affected. Mouth guards, also called mouth protectors, help cushion a blow to the face, minimizing the risk of broken teeth and injuries to your lips, tongue, face, or jaw. Here at our office, we provide patients with custom-made mouth guards to best suit their needs.

For the highest level of comfort and protection, you should visit our dentists for a custom mouth guard fitting. A custom mouth guard is created specifically for the optimal protection of your mouth and your mouth only. The thinness of the custom mouth guard also allows for easy breathing and easy communication, which is important when you’re calling shots on the field or the court.

If you think you may benefit from a mouth guard, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our office, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. Are Dental Implants Right for You?

If you have a toothless grin, our staff at Bridge Smile Dental Group P.A. can recommend dental implants. Dental implants are replacement tooth roots that provide a strong foundation for fixed (permanent) or removable replacement teeth that are made to match your natural teeth. There are many benefits to this restoration option, such as improved appearance, improved speech, improved self-esteem, and improved overall health to name a few.

In most cases, anyone healthy enough to undergo a routine dental extraction or oral surgery can be considered for a dental implant. This is because patients need to have healthy gums and enough bone to support the implant, otherwise they risk the dental implant failing. If you are a smoker, have diabetes, cancer, or uncontrolled periodontal disease, this may affect whether dental implants will fuse to your jawbone. Like tooth roots, dental implants are secured in the jawbone and are not visible once surgically placed. Where and how implants are placed requires a detailed assessment of your overall mouth and jaw structure.

Why Do We Have Teeth?

Here Bridge Smile Dental Group P.A., it is our job to educate you about your smile and the teeth that make it up. You’ve probably noticed that you have different types of permanent teeth in your mouth, but did you know that each one has its own function? Allow us to tell you about the purpose they serve!

The types of teeth and their functions are:

  • Incisors – located at the front of the mouth, these teeth have a sharp biting surface and are used for cutting or shearing food into small chewable pieces.

  • Canines – located at the ‘corners’ of the dental arches, these teeth have a sharp pointed biting surface. Their function is to grip and tear food.

  • Premolars – Unlike incisors and canines, these teeth have a flat biting surface. Their function is to tear and crush food.

  • Molars – The molars are the largest teeth in the mouth and they too have a large flat biting surface. The function of these is perhaps the strongest of all as they chew, crush, and grind food.

If you have questions about your pearly whites, don’t hesitate to give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our office, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. ARESTIN for Gum Disease

Gum disease is the #1 cause of adult tooth loss in the United States. If you don’t practice proper oral hygiene on a daily basis, you can develop gingivitis (the earliest stage of gum disease), which if left untreated can lead to periodontitis (the final stage of gum disease). Gingivitis is reversible, however, periodontitis is not. If your gum disease moves past the stage of gingivitis, our doctors at Bridge Smile Dental Group P.A. may need to apply ARESTIN to the gums, an antibiotic that is used in adjunct to scaling and root planing.

Scaling and root planing is an effective gum disease treatment. In this procedure, our doctors use tools to clean plaque and tartar from your teeth and roots below the gum line. During the procedure, our doctors utilize ARESTIN, an antibiotic that contains microspheres smaller than grains of sand. ARESTIN is placed directly on your gums and has the power to kill bacteria so your gums can heal better than with scaling and root planing alone. In one single visit, our doctors can add ARESTIN to the pocket between your gum and tooth. It is a painless procedure, with effective results.

If are due for a dental checkup, please give us a call. To learn more about ARESTIN as well as services we provide at the practice, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. Handling Dental Emergencies

Accidents happen, and knowing what to do when a dental emergency occurs can mean the difference between saving and losing a tooth. At Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A., our goal is to help you minimize the risk of emergency treatment. This is why we commit a copious amount of time designing a Lifetime Treatment Plan that will help you to offset the possibility of unforeseen pain or tooth breakage. When you have a dental emergency it’s important to visit us as soon as possible. Meanwhile, here are some tips for handling common dental emergencies.

Dr. Samuel Meghadri is on call 24/7. If you have a dental emergency, please contact our office immediately. What Are Veneers?

If you have stained, chipped, decayed, or crooked teeth, then you may benefit from veneers. Veneers are thin, custom-made shells crafted of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front side of teeth. Veneers are an excellent alternative to crowns in many situations because they provide a much more conservative approach to changing a tooth’s color, size, or shape. If you have any questions about Veneers, just ask one of our doctors at Bridge Smile Dental Group P.A.

Veneers are ideal for masking discolored fillings in front teeth. Patients with gaps between their front teeth or teeth that are worn down may consider veneers. The procedure itself requires little or no anesthesia and can be the ideal choice for restoring your smile. Once veneers have been applied by your dentist, for about a week or two, you will go through a period of adjustment as you get used to your new teeth that have changed in size and shape. Nevertheless, the results will be a confidence boost and a brand new smile.

If you think you may benefit from veneers, please give us a call. To learn more about veneers as well as services we provide at the practice, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Bridge Smile Dental Group P.A. in Somerville, NJ, call 908-725-0400.

Details On Dentures

If you have missing teeth, our doctors at Bridge Smile Dental Group P.A. have a variety of treatment options to replace them to help you improve your appearance and smile. One of these options is dentures. Dentures are custom-made replacements for missing teeth that can be taken out and put back in your mouth. While they may take some getting used to, and will never feel exactly the same as natural teeth, they are a non-invasive form of treatment that provides great benefits.

Today’s dentures are natural looking and more comfortable than ever. There are two main types: full and partial. With full dentures, a flesh-colored acrylic base fits over your gums. The base of the upper denture covers the roof of your mouth while that of the lower denture is shaped like a horseshoe to accommodate your tongue. A partial denture rests on a metal framework that attaches to your natural teeth. Partial dentures are a removable alternative to dental bridges. After you schedule a consultation with one of our doctors, they will determine which type is best for you.

If you think you may benefit from dentures, please give us a call. To learn more about dentures as well as services we provide at the practice, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. What are Fastbraces?

Have you ever wanted a straighter smile that didn’t require years to move teeth into place? At Bridge Smile Dental Group P.A., we offer a solution called Fastbraces that do just that. Traditional braces are usually square in shape and typically move the crown of the tooth in the first year, and the root of the tooth towards its final position in the second year, thus requiring about two years of treatment. Meanwhile, Fastbraces technology gently allows for movement of the roots of the teeth towards their final position from the onset of treatment, thus completing treatment from three months to about a year.

With safety in mind, Fastbraces technology was developed to straighten teeth differently – allowing for a fast, safe and affordable solution. Your journey will begin after scheduling a consultation with one of our dentists. During this consultation, the doctor will take radiographs and pictures of your teeth. This will help them create a customized plan for you.

If you desire a straighter smile, give us a call to discuss your orthodontic options. Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide sometimes called “laughing gas” is one option our dentists at Bridge Smile Dental Group P.A. may offer to help make you more comfortable during certain procedures. Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose and helps you relax. If a visit to the dentist’s office makes you cringe, or you simply wish to remove the discomfort from a professional cleaning, we are here to make you as calm as possible.

Receiving nitrous oxide as a form of sedation is the only type that allows you to drive yourself home after the procedure. It is not intended to put you to sleep, and you will be able to hear and respond to any requests or directions the dentist may have. Overall, you may feel light-headed or a tingling sensation in your arms and legs, but the effects of nitrous oxide will wear off soon after the mask is removed.

If you suffer from dental fear, give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn more about sedation options as well as the services we provide, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Bridge Smile Dental Group P.A. in Somerville, NJ, call 908-725-0400.

Scaling and Root Planing Heals Your Gums

If you have a severe case of gum disease, our doctors at Bridge Smile Dental Group P.A. may recommend a non-surgical procedure called scaling and root planing. Perhaps you’ve been neglecting your oral hygiene, or you just haven’t been removing plaque well enough. Whatever the case, over time, dental plaque will slither below the gum line, forming “pockets” between the teeth and gums. The larger these pockets grow, the worse gum disease gets.

Scaling and root planing are common nonsurgical techniques that may prevent the need for more serious procedures in the future, such as periodontal surgery or a root canal. Scaling involves the dentist or hygienist using a hook shaped tool (dental scaler) to remove the plaque and tartar from below the gum line while root planing uses special tools to smooth rough spots on the tooth roots. This process not only removes bacteria and helps reduce plaque buildup, but it provides a smooth surface to reattach to the teeth.
