Braces – Pain Management

Though there are many benefits of traditional braces, sometimes you have to play through the pain. The main disadvantage to this orthodontic method tends to be the metal mouth appearance, but a close second is the tightening of the wires that our doctors perform during your routine visit. There are two types of pain that traditional braces may cause, and our doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. would like to tell you how you can manage both.

The pain of braces may be attributed to internal or external factors. Sometimes the pressure that braces put on the teeth can leave them sore. Additionally, the physical rubbing of the brackets and wires can cause pain in the soft tissue (gums). If a wire is sticking out and you don’t have time to stop in for us to fix it, orthodontic wax is available for purchase at your local drugstore. Other methods of pain control include taking ibuprofen, brushing your teeth in a soft manner, and eating soft foods.

If you have questions or concerns about orthodontic treatment, please give us a call. Periodontal Splinting

Patients with periodontal disease will be glad to know that we have a number of treatments available for them at Bridge Smiles Dental Group. Sometimes, teeth have become too loose to be saved through bonding, but the patient does not wish to undergo extractions or cannot do so safely. These are the kinds of cases in which we consider periodontal splinting.

Also called binding, a splint is a permanent structure in the mouth which is used to distribute the force of a bite across the whole arch of teeth. This takes pressure off of the weakest ones. Splinting is one of the oldest periodontal treatments, going back to the medieval Italy, if not ancient Egypt, but modern developments make splints unobtrusive and comfortable.

The splint is a highly porous strip of fabric which is covered in resin. The backs of the incisors are then sketched with acid so that they’ll have more surface area with which to grip the splint. This is the same process that is used when brackets are placed on teeth during orthodontic treatment, and while it makes teeth sensitive for a little while, it is safe, and the gums are protected with gel. Because the porous strip has absorbed most of the resin, it only takes a bit of dental cement to keep it in place. This minimizes the size of the new ridge on the back of the patient’s teeth. Splints don’t prevent or undo the gum damage which resulted in weak teeth, but they do provide an alternate means of keeping teeth secure.

Digital Imaging in Dentistry

Bridge Smiles Dental Group brings you the latest in dental care through our digital office. Our imaging software not only allows us to design treatments and devices for our patients with improved accuracy, it also provides a safer, more comfortable experience at the clinic. Crucial to our office is our digital x-ray machine, the Panorex.

Digital x-rays eliminate the need for the patient to hold film in their mouth while images are taken. Though the patient will have to bite on a jaw aligner while the panels of the Panorex rotate around their head, this process should only take about twenty seconds. During this time, the patient’s chin will rest on an adjustable ledge, making the Panorex easily adaptable to wheelchair users.

The image taken from a Panorex shows a panoramic view of the patient’s mouth, making it an improvement over traditional x-rays which only showed a portion. The images are also fully integrated into our software for planning orthodontics and extractions. Patients will still need to remove metal and jewelry but are exposed to much less radiation. The exception to this would be if the Panorex is being used in its 3D cone-beam mode. This higher-radiation mode allows us to take detailed, 3D images of soft tissues and nerves, providing us with a complete view of the patient’s jaw structure while diagnosing and treating oral pathologies and planning implant placement.

Non-Dairy Ways to Build Calcium Intake

Calcium is vital for bone health and it’s especially essential for keeping your teeth strong. Calcium is usually found in milk, cheese, and other dairy products, but if you live a vegan lifestyle or are lactose intolerant you will need to find other sources of calcium. Our doctors at Bridge Smile Dental Group P.A. encourage our patients to eat a well-balanced diet to keep their smile strong, so allow us to tell you which non-dairy calcium rich foods are best for your teeth.

Cutting back on dairy or eliminating dairy products from your diet completely can mean skimping out on your daily dose of calcium. If you eat a plant-based diet, however, your body can get over 500mg of calcium without even realizing it. One cup of kale has about 100mg of calcium, while sweet potatoes have about 65mg of calcium per cup. Other calcium-fortified foods include orange juice, (but not too much because of the acidity) whey powder, almonds, and soy milk.

If you wish to discuss nutrition that benefits your teeth, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our office, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Bridge Smile Dental Group P.A. in Somerville, NJ, call 908-725-0400.

What to Do After Losing a Permanent Tooth

Though we hope our patients at the Bridge Smiles Dental Group never experience a dental emergency such as the loss of a permanent tooth, we want them to be prepared if they do. There is a chance that a tooth could be saved if it is in one piece, but it requires immediate attention from a dentist and for the tooth to be kept clean and wet.

When handling the tooth, only hold it by the crown (the part which was visible when it was in its socket). Some first aid kits are stocked with containers for lost teeth and a special solution to place them in. If there is no first aid kit at hand, rinse the tooth with milk or saltwater and then place it back in the socket, facing the right way. The next best option is to hold it in the cheek; otherwise, it should be brought to the dental office in a container filled with milk or a saline solution.

Implants and baby teeth cannot be saved. Dentists only attempt to save implants when the gum tissue surrounding them is inflamed, not when they’ve been knocked clear of the bone matrix they integrated with. Saving a baby tooth could prevent it from getting out of the way of the permanent tooth. Children who have lost teeth prematurely are usually given an orthodontic spacer to ensure their other teeth do not shift into the gap.

Advice about saving permanent teeth assumes that the lost tooth is the patient’s most severe injury. If the patient has suffered a massive bleeding wound or suspects that their jaws or other facial bones are broken, they should go to an emergency room instead of a dental office.

Baby Bottle Tooth Decay

Dentists use the phrase “Baby Bottle Tooth Decay” to refer to a pattern of tooth decay often seen in babies and toddlers which affects the front sides of their incisors. We at the Bridge Smiles Dental Group treat whole families, so we want to teach them to protect their youngest members.

Dental education materials aimed at children stress the danger of sugar so heavily that people may get the idea that it is the amount of sugar consumed which puts children at risk of cavities. But it’s actually the amount of time sugar remains on the teeth which is associated with decay. Older children and adults clean away some of the food trapped on their teeth by drinking water and tend to restrict their sugar intake to certain times, giving their saliva opportunities to wash their teeth. However, babies often are given bottles filled with milk or formula to suck on all day. This will keep their teeth coated in sugar without any way of removing it.

Fruit juice and soda have much more sugar than formula and milk and are inadvisable to ever serve in a bottle. Parents should also keep in mind that their children need water as well as milk or formula and that a baby’s access to a bottle should be limited. Toddlers should be taught to drink from cups as early as possible.

Why Not to Do Your Own Orthodontics

We of the Bridge Smiles Dental Group are proud to have provided orthodontic corrections on patients suffering from the effects of misalignment. While we sympathize with patients who want healthy smiles quick and on the cheap, we are concerned by a recent study by the American Association of Orthodontists which found that 13% of orthodontists have had to help a patient who attempted to do orthodontics on themselves.

Bone migration cannot be rushed. The orthodontic process doesn’t just push teeth through gum tissue; it also pushes them through jaw bone. If this is done too quickly, the bone will not have time to repair itself and the teeth could easily shift back or come loose.

DIY orthodontics was popularized by somebody who 3D printed his own aligners, but most home remedies are much cruder. Tying teeth together will pinch off their blood vessels and creates a risk of the tie sliding into the gum pocket, from which it must be fished out with a hook. Many of the materials people have suggested to use in place of wires, such as rubber or fiber, would also rot or release harmful chemicals. Our office offers fast braces to people who want to correct overcrowding or misalignment. We urge prospective patients to look into this option instead of doing something which may result in their needing replacement teeth.

How to Care for Dentures

Getting dentures is a major transition, and at Bridge Smiles Dental Group, we want to ensure it goes as smoothly as possible for our clients. Keeping dentures clean requires a different hygienic regimen, so we thought patients would appreciate a short guide.

Enamel is the hardest substance in the human body. Though dentures can restore a patient’s bite function, they are not as resilient as natural teeth and should only be cleaned with toothpaste specially made for them. This is because the grit in toothpaste which builds up natural teeth will scratch dentures. Only soft-bristled toothbrushes should be used for any kind of oral hygiene, but dentures need to be brushed all over (not just on the teeth) and should be held over a towel in case the patient drops them.

Patients will remove their dentures each night. While they are out of the mouth, dentures should be kept soaking in cleaning solution or room-temperature water. Hot water will warp them. While it is expected that dentures will need to be refitted every so often, only a professional should attempt to bend them, and warped dentures may not be reparable. Before putting them back in each morning, patients should brush their mouths to prevent infections and restore blood flow.

Tips to Quit Smoking

Not everyone is successful when they try to quit smoking. In fact, almost 70 percent of smokers want to quit, but few actually succeed. Smoking not only leads to problems for your overall health, it leads to dental problems as well. Our doctors at Bridge Smile Dental Group P.A. don’t want you to fall victim of tooth discoloration, gum disease, and/or oral cancer, which is why we’ve rounded up some tips to help you stop smoking.

It’s safe to say that not all quitting techniques for work for everyone and many people may come up with their own methods that work better for them, but the American Dental Association suggests five steps to help you put the pack down.
  1. Have a Plan – Reflect on why you want to quit in the first place. Are you doing it for you? Are you doing it for your loved ones? Are you doing it for your health? Once you’ve made up your mind on why you want to quit smoking, set the date and develop a plan.
  2. Don’t Do it Alone – Whether you need a little extra help from your dentist, a therapist, or friends, it’s important to have support when you attempt to quit smoking because this will maximize your chance of succeeding.
  3. Stay Busy – Exercise, do yoga, make plans for dinner with some non-smoker friends. Additionally, chew on sugarless gum to keep your mouth busy and prevent cavities.
  4. Avoid Smoking Triggers – Stay away from people, places, and things that trigger your craving to light up.
  5. Reward Your Accomplishments – The same way you give your dog a treat for being obedient, reward yourself for every hour or day that you go without a cigarette. With all the money you’ll be saving on quitting, you may be able to treat yourself to a nice vacation.
If you need assistance to quit smoking, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. Oral Piercings and Oral Health

In recent years, oral piercings have become a form of self-expression. Though our doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. encourage patients to express themselves, we want to warn you of the dangers that oral piercings can cause. If you pierce your tongue, lips, or cheeks, it can interfere not only with your speech but chewing and swallowing as well.

Oral piercings may look “cool” but it’s important to know that you are at risk of infection before you choose to go through with the action of piercing. This is because your mouth is home to huge amounts of breeding bacteria, and is an ideal place for infection. Oral jewelry can also rub against your gums, causing the gums to pull away from the teeth and expose the root, leaving them sensitive to hot and cold beverages. Whether or not you’ve already received an oral piercing, it’s important to keep your mouth clean at all times. In addition to brushing and flossing your teeth twice daily, use an antiseptic mouthwash after every meal to eliminate plaque and bacteria.

If you have questions about oral hygiene, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. Gingivitis: Explained

Gingivitis is a common and mild form of gum disease (periodontal disease) that causes irritation, redness, and swelling (inflammation) of your gums. Because gingivitis can be mild, you may not be aware that you have the condition. However, it’s important to take gingivitis seriously and treat it promptly. The most common cause of gingivitis is poor oral hygiene. If you are not maintaining a proper oral hygiene routine, our doctors at Bridge Smile Dental Group, P.A., are here to help by providing you with routine dental cleanings.

Gingivitis commonly occurs because of films of bacteria that accumulate on the teeth (plaque). Gingivitis is a non-destructive type of periodontal disease, which means that it can be prevented. Generally, gingivitis resolves with good oral hygiene – longer and more frequent brushing, as well as flossing. If the condition is left untreated, gum disease can spread and affect tissue, teeth, and bones, leading to periodontitis which can eventually lead to tooth loss.

If you notice a bit of blood in the sink while brushing your teeth, give us a call to discuss treatment options.  To learn more about the services we provide at our office, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. Straight Teeth are Healthy Teeth

Swollen red gums can often be the result of having teeth that are crowded or too widely spaced. When teeth are properly aligned, it helps the gums fit more securely around the teeth, allowing for the strongest and healthiest defense against potential periodontal problems. At Bridge Smile Dental Group P.A., we can provide you with a variety of options to straighten your teeth so that you can have a beautiful healthy smile.

When teeth are properly aligned, they’re easier to clean and when your teeth are clean and dental plaque free, you’re less likely to need a tooth filling or gum disease treatment. When teeth are straight, it helps the gums fit more securely around the teeth, allowing for the strongest and healthiest defense against potential periodontal problems. Tooth decay and gum disease are caused by bacteria. Left untreated, they can cause mouth sores, tender or bleeding gums, bad breath, and possible tooth loss.  Correctly aligning your teeth can also alleviate the issues that can be caused by an improper bite, speech or chewing difficulties, jaw problems and increased wear on the tooth enamel.

Denture Pain

Denture pain typically stems from poor fitting or poorly adjusted dentures. It may also be a result of new dentures, worn over soft tissues that have not developed thick, toughened layers of protective keratin. If you are experiencing gum and mouth irritation, problems eating and speaking, mouth infections and/or dentures that move around in your mouth, give our doctors at Bridge Smile Dental Group P.A. a call to discuss your treatment options.

If you wear dentures, it is very important you keep your mouth clean and healthy. In addition, you should never experience pain when wearing your dentures. If you do experience pain from your dentures and this discomfort is not treated by speaking slowly, eating soft foods or using an adhesive, your dentures may need to be replaced. At Bridge Smile Dental Group P.A., we have plenty of tooth-replacement options for you to choose from if dentures aren’t working out.

Toothbrush Care

Brushing your teeth plays an important everyday role for personal oral hygiene and effective plaque removal. You may not give much thought to cleaning your toothbrush; however appropriate toothbrush care and maintenance are important considerations for oral hygiene. At Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. we want you to know how and when to replace, clean, and store your toothbrush.
The American Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush approximately every three to four months or sooner if bristles are frayed. However, toothbrushes will wear out more rapidly depending on factors unique to each patient. It is also important to never share a toothbrush because this practice could be a concern for people with compromised immune systems or existing infectious diseases. If your toothbrush comes in contact with another, thoroughly rinse the brush with warm tap water to remove any remaining toothbrush and debris. When you are done using the toothbrush, store it in an upright position and allow the toothbrush to air-dry until used again.

Don't Suffer the Consequences of Missing Teeth

Although tooth loss is typically associated with the elderly, missing teeth can occur in adults for a variety of reasons. Whether you’ve lost a tooth to decay, or injury, tooth loss can rob you of much more than the ability to chew and properly digest food. It can have serious social, psychological and emotional consequences as well. At Bridge Smile Dental Group P.A., we don’t want you to experience the disadvantages of a toothless grin. This is why we offer a wide variety of restorative and cosmetic options to give you the smile you’ve always dreamed of.

The most obvious effect of missing teeth is aesthetic. When a tooth is lost, the facial muscles begin to sag, making you appear older than you are. Additionally, missing teeth will make it more difficult to chew and may even affect the way you speak. The more teeth a person is missing, the more challenging the task to replace them can become. It can also be costly. It is important to have regular dental visits with us to prolong the life of your teeth.

If you have missing teeth, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn more about the services we provide at our office, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. Sleep is important for endless reasons. It is connected to the healing and repair of your heart vessels. Therefore, if sleep deficiency is left untreated, it can lead to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. In addition to assisting in the rejuvenation of your body, sleep help keeps your heart healthy, reduces stress, improves your memory and can help control body weight issues.

Dental Abscesses

When the inside of your mouth gets hurt or irritated, bacteria may enter and cause an infection. Sometimes you will see a painful swelling with pus. This is called a dental abscess and it can form from a deep cavity, periodontal disease, a cracked tooth, trauma, or sometimes even due to recent dental procedures such as extractions and implants. This condition can become painful, so if you notice one, you should visit our doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. right away.
The cause of these infections is a direct growth of bacteria from within the pulp spaces of a tooth or on the deep root surfaces of a tooth into the supporting soft tissues and bones of the face and neck. Often one or more teeth will be very sensitive to pressure. With an advanced infection, one can experience discomfort from nausea, vomiting, and/or difficulty swallowing.

Xylitol Dental Benefits

If you are prone to cavities but refuse to put down the sweet treats, our doctors at Bridge Smile Dental Group P.A. recommend incorporating some xylitol into your diet. Xylitol is a naturally occurring alcohol found in most plant material, including many fruits and vegetables. It tastes sweet but, unlike table sugar, it is not converted in the mouth to acids that cause tooth decay. If you have no desire to change your diet don’t worry, xylitol can conveniently be delivered to your teeth via chewing gum, tablets, or even candy.

In addition to reducing the development of cavities, xylitol also reduces plaque formation and increases salivary flow to aid in the repair of damaged tooth enamel. It also provides one-third fewer calories than sugar and may be useful as a sugar alternative for people with diabetes. So next time you’re strolling through the candy aisle at a convenience store, you may want to look for a label that mentions this sugar substitute.

If you have questions about xylitol and the dental benefits it provides, please give us a call. Dental Care and Pregnancy

If you are an expectant mother, congratulations! Our staff at Bridge Smile Dental Group P.A. understands how exciting and busy this moment is for you. In fact, you have so much to think about during pregnancy that it may be easy to overlook your oral hygiene. Pregnancy can actually make dental problems worse, which is why it’s important to continue your dental visits during pregnancy for checkups and cleanings, along with brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between your teeth once a day.

As a precautionary measure, dental treatments during the first trimester and second half of the third trimester should be avoided as much as possible, except in the case of emergency. These are critical times in the baby’s growth and development and it’s simply wise to avoid exposing the mother to procedures that could harm that in any way. However, routine dental care can be received during the second trimester. Don’t skip your dental checkup appointment simply because you are pregnant. Now more than ever, regular periodontal exams are very important, because pregnancy causes hormonal changes that put you at increased risk for periodontal disease and a condition called pregnancy gingivitis.

Pay attention to any changes in your gums during pregnancy. If you notice any changes, give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our office, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. Dental Anxiety in Patients

It is one thing for anxiety to affect your daily relationships, but when it starts to impact your overall health then it becomes a problem. Dental anxiety, or dental phobia, is much more serious than just getting sweating palms and sleepless nights before an appointment – it’s a paralyzing fear of dentists or dental treatment. Luckily Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. has the tools, techniques, and gentle touch to help make regular dental visits as comfortable as possible for you.

The key to coping with dental anxiety is to discuss your fears with your dentist. Once your dentist knows what your fears are, he or she will better be able to work with you to determine the best ways to make you less anxious and more relaxed. In addition, ask your dentist what’s happening at every stage of the procedure. This way you can mentally prepare for what’s to come.

If you suffer from dental anxiety, give us a call so we ease your fear. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. Cavity Basics

There are two main factors that contribute to cavities. One is bacteria in the mouth and the other is a diet that is high in sugar. It’s no surprise that cavities are common among children, but changes that occur with aging, make cavities an adult problem, too. To prevent cavities from occurring you should brush and floss on a daily basis, in addition to scheduling professional cleanings at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. twice a year.

Cavities, or tooth decay, are the destruction of your tooth enamel, the hard, outer layer of your teeth. Tooth decay is heavily influenced by lifestyle, what we eat, how well we take care of our teeth, and the presence of fluoride in our water and toothpaste. Only your dentist can tell for sure if you have one because sometimes cavities cause little to no pain at all. Regardless of how and where they occur, the best way to spot them and treat them before they become serious is by visiting our doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A.

If you have a tooth that is causing you pain, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.bridgesmilesdental.com for more information. The Process of a Root Canal

If you’re in need of a root canal, do not worry! Due to new technology, root canals are no more uncomfortable than having a cavity filled. Bridges SmilesDental Group P.A. performs root canals to save patients teeth from infection, and ultimately, loss. Read through to learn how a root canal is performed so you know what to expect.

With modern pain medication and advances in technology, root canals are working on shedding their bad reputation of being painful or scary. They now only create minor discomfort. Plus, they will relieve a lot of pain and sensitivity that you may be experiencing from the infection.
A local anesthetic is used to numb the area before the procedure begins. An access hole will then be drilled into the tooth to reach the infected dental pulp. The pulp is cleaned out, replaced with a sealant, and then a filling is placed in the access hole. In some cases, we may want to apply a crown to the tooth for extra strength and protection.

Signs that a root canal is needed include prolonged pain and sensitivity, swelling at the site, a darkening of the tooth, and irritated gums. A reoccurring sore may also occur on the gums near the affected tooth.

To learn more about root canals, visit our Bridges Smiles Dental Group P.A. website, www.bridgesmilesdental.com. To set up an appointment at our Neshanic Station, NJ office, call (908) 782-4418. To set up an appointment at our Somerville, NJ office, call (908) 725-0400.

The Process of Installing a Dental Implant

Of all the options to replace teeth, dental implants are the most durable and longest-lasting. With good dental care, they are able to last a lifetime. Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. offers dental implants to patients with missing teeth for this reason.

Dental implants are the option most similar to an actual tooth since the root is replaced; keeping the jawbone from deteriorating. The actual implant is a titanium post inserted into the bone socket. The tooth restoration is a custom dental crown. It is made specifically for you so it is the perfect fit and it looks natural.

Dental implants are surgically inserted into the bone socket where it will take several months to bond with the jawbone. During this healing time, your dentist will place a temporary crown on the tooth. When the healing process is complete, an abutment is placed on the implant post to serve as the base of the permanent crown. The custom crown is then cemented into place. With good care, dental implants can last a lifetime.

If you are looking to replace one or more teeth, dental implants could be the best option for you. To find out, schedule an appointment in our Neshanic Station, NJ office by calling (908) 782-4418 or schedule at our Somerville, NJ office by calling (908) 725-0400. More information about implants can be found on our website, www.bridgesmilesdental.com.

Oral Health Care for Seniors

These problems include but are not limited to darkened teeth, dry mouth, gum disease, tooth loss, root decay and gum disease. Here at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. our doctors provide seniors with honorable dental care by encouraging them to have healthy nutrition and proper dental cleanings.

Seniors are more likely to suffer from a host of oral health issues resulting from their inability to provide themselves with adequate dental hygiene care. Certain medical conditions, such as arthritis in the hands and fingers that may make brushing or flossing teeth difficult to perform. These factors leave many seniors at risk of ignoring tooth decay and tooth infection until there is no alternative but tooth extraction. At each of our practices, we have procedures or products to prevent this from happening. With regular checkups, we can catch problems in the earliest stages to help prevent serious conditions from occurring.

Baby Tooth Care Tips

Baby teeth may be small, but they’re important. To help prevent the buildup of plaque bacteria that can lead to decay, our doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A recommend regularly cleaning your newborn’s gums with a damp washcloth following feedings. It’s important to start cleaning your child’s teeth before they come in to jumpstart a healthy smile.

Wipe the gums off after each feeding with a warm, wet washcloth or a dampened piece of gauze wrapped around your finger. In addition, take measures to prevent baby bottle tooth decay, a disease that causes severe, swift decay of baby teeth. To help prevent it, do not put your baby to bed with a bottle of formula or a sugary drink, such as juice. The possibility of tooth decay is directly related to the number of times that sugar comes in contact with the teeth. Your child’s baby teeth act as placeholders for adult teeth. Without a healthy set of baby teeth, your child risks having trouble chewing and speaking clearly as they get older.

Diabetic Oral Care

People with poorly controlled diabetes are more prone to dental problems. They are more likely to develop infections of their gums and the bones that hold the teeth in place because diabetes can reduce the blood supply to the gums. If you have diabetes, please call our office to schedule a professional exam with our doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. to prevent further dental complications.

If you have diabetes, symptoms of dental problems include bleeding and sore gums, frequent infections, and bad breath. Whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, managing your blood sugar level is critical. The higher your blood sugar level, the higher your risk of tooth decay, gingivitis, and periodontitis. Additionally, high blood sugar may cause dry mouth and make gum disease worse. The decrease in saliva can cause an increase in tooth-decaying bacteria and plaque buildup. You can prevent these problems by maintaining good blood sugar control, brushing and flossing and least twice a day, and schedule a dental checkup every six months.

Bruxism Basics

Grinding of your teeth, also known as bruxism can have a variety of causes. Some experts view bruxism as nothing more than a habit. It can also be a result of the body’s reaction when the teeth do not line up or come together properly. Some people grind their teeth only during sleep. This is called “nocturnal bruxism” or “sleep-related bruxism.” Others grind or clench their teeth during the daytime as well. If you experience signs and symptoms of bruxism, one of our doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. can develop an individualized treatment plan for you.

When diagnosing bruxism, one of our doctors will ask about your general dental health, what sources of stress you have in your life, and what medicines you take. He or she will then examine you, paying special attention to the muscles in and around your jaw. Additionally, the doctor may look at your teeth for evidence of grinding as well as check for tenderness in your jaw muscles and the jaw joint.
If you catch yourself grinding or clenching your teeth, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options.

Clear, Less Noticeable Braces

Having a nice, straight smile is a desire so many of us have. However, the thought of traditional metal braces may scare a patient away. That is why here at Bridge Smiles Dental Group in Neshanic Station, NJ and Somerville, NJ, we offer clear braces.

Clear braces work just the same as traditional braces but they are less visible. Clear braces have ceramic brackets which blend in well with the color of your teeth. Clear or tooth-colored wires can also be possible. In every other sense, they work just like traditional braces. They are applied the same way; brackets are attached to each tooth and are all connected by a wire. The wire is tightened in different directions to apply continuous pressure on the teeth. Over time, the teeth shift into place. Each patient has a different case, but the average amount of time for a teen to wear braces is about two years. For an adult, the average is one year.

Clear braces take away the traditional metallic look of braces and create a less noticeable form of straightening. Many patients can now feel better about the look of their smile while undergoing treatment.

If you are interested in a more discreet set of braces, clear braces may be the perfect option for you. Do You Clean Your Tongue?

Cleaning your tongue is an important part of your oral care process. Are you not familiar with the process or the benefits of a clean tongue? At Bridge Smiles Dental Group in Neshanic Station, NJ and Somerville, NJ, we want our patients to be informed on how to take excellent oral care. Keep reading to learn about cleaning the tongue!

With tiny, hair-like taste buds, bacteria can become trapped in the tongue like a sponge. This can lead to more plaque, more cavities, and bad breath! Just like plaque forms on your teeth after a few hours, a film of bacteria can also form on your tongue.

To clean your tongue, you can use your toothbrush or a tongue scraper. There are metal and plastic tongue scrapers that can be found where dental supplies are sold. Any of these options will do just fine.

Take your toothbrush or tongue scraper and place it on the back of your tongue, press down firmly and drag the toothbrush down towards the tip of your tongue. Do not press down hard; this may injure taste buds. Scrape your tongue a few times until it looks clean, rinsing your toothbrush or tongue scraper after each stroke.

Cleaning your tongue leads you to better oral health and fresher breath. To schedule your next cleaning and examination with Bridge Smiles Dental Group, call our Neshanic Station, NJ office at (908) 782-4418 or our Somerville, NJ office at (908) 725-0400.
