Oral Piercings and Oral Health

In recent years, oral piercings have become a form of self-expression. Though our doctors at Bridge Smiles Dental Group P.A. encourage patients to express themselves, we want to warn you of the dangers that oral piercings can cause. If you pierce your tongue, lips, or cheeks, it can interfere not only with your speech but chewing and swallowing as well.

Oral piercings may look “cool” but it’s important to know that you are at risk of infection before you choose to go through with the action of piercing. This is because your mouth is home to huge amounts of breeding bacteria, and is an ideal place for infection. Oral jewelry can also rub against your gums, causing the gums to pull away from the teeth and expose the root, leaving them sensitive to hot and cold beverages. Whether or not you’ve already received an oral piercing, it’s important to keep your mouth clean at all times. In addition to brushing and flossing your teeth twice daily, use an antiseptic mouthwash after every meal to eliminate plaque and bacteria.
